General

In 2014, the world's largest and most famous cymbal manufacturer had been in business for 391 years. To celebrate this, and to prove that Zildjian is still the leading name in the cymbal making industry, the people at the Zildjian Soundlab released a special series of cymbals under the moniker 'Project 391'. After 391 years of making cymbals, it may seem like there is little left to discover or innovate. But nothing could be further from the truth, because with these Project 391 cymbals, Zildjian managed to find a particular sound that had been missing from their (already very impressive) palette of sounds.

Cymbals

This Zildjian Soundlab cymbal set consists of three cymbals. The 15-inch hi-hats have excellent stick definition and warm sound. Furthermore, these hi-hats can definitely take a beating. When you play them closed, they offer a consistent, well-defined sound, and when you open them up, the sound gradually grows while staying nicely in balance with the rest of your drum kit. The 18-inch crash cymbal has a bright, explosive sound and cuts through the mix with ease, and the 22-inch ride completes this fantastic set of cymbals with its medium sustain and its bright sound.

Project 391 series: the special B15 alloy completes Zildjian's sound palette

Judging by their timbre, these cymbals can be placed somewhere in between the A or K series and the ZBT series. It's the material that makes these cymbals so special. For the Project 391 cymbals, the folks at the Zildjian Soundlab developed a special alloy that they had never used before. This B15 alloy consists of 85% copper and 15% tin, giving the cymbals a beefier low end than the B8 or B12 alloys would, while still keeping their fierce attack and high end tones. This resulted in very bright sounding cymbals with a large dynamic range and a great balance between high and low tones. No matter if you're a hard hitter or a more nuanced player, these cymbals sound great in any pop or rock setting.

Wrote the following about Zildjian Soundlab Project 391 22-inch ride Limited Edition
Heel mooi bekken met een perfecte balans tussen ping en wash. Klinkt helder maar met een warme ondertoon en daardoor voor verschillende muziekstijlen inzetbaar. De prijs kwaliteitsverhouding is wat mij betreft erg hoog. Absolute aanrader!
