General

For many guitarists, the legendary Ross compressor remains the standard. It won't surprise you to learn, therefore, that many manufacturers have tried to emulate the sound of this classic. Rather than simply trying to emulate the sound, however, Xotic decided to use the same technique too. By using an OTA (operational transconductance amplifier), Xotic's SP uses the same compression technique as Ross. The pedal itself is extremely compact and features a very useful Blend control.

Xotic SP: small and versatile

At first glance, the Xotic SP compressor doesn't look particularly special. Looks can be deceiving, though. In total, there are no less than seven different parameters for you to play with. Set beyond 12 o'clock, the volume control adds extra boost to your signal. With the blend control, you can adjust the ratio between the dry and compressed signal.
Together with the internal switches, this gives you a compressor that is just as good at delivering a classic country twang as it is at compressing or boosting your lead sound with unprecedented sustain.

Xotic SP: internal switches

Contained in SP compressor's robust housing are four extra mini switches known as dip switches. Switches 1 and 2 are for the attack and release parameters, while 3 turns the high cut filter on and off. The fourth switch, known as Pad, lets you decide whether to send your guitar's signal with or without padding. This is a handy option for high-output instruments to prevent any unwanted distortion. Placing these switches on the bottom eliminates the chance that they will be changed accidentally during your performance.

Xotic SP compressor effects pedal

Xotic SP Compressor is an excellent small pedal which takes up little space on a busy pedalboard. It's probably the best compressor I've used including MXR & Boss pedals. The main controls are simple but the internal switches give even more variety to your compression. Buy this, you won't be disappointed.
