General

The AC4HW1 is a full-tube guitar combo amp from the Hand Wired series by VOX. This series makes use of the best hand-crafted components - and we're not talking about modelling or iPad connectivity, but pure tube sound, just like it should be. The AC4HW1 offers the same sound as the legendary AC30, only at a volume that is more suited for the home. Don't be fooled though, because with four tube watts it can also be a great fit for studios and small stages. When you choose the AC4HW1, you're choosing to enjoy the sparkling cleans and creamy overdrives that only a VOX AC can create!

VOX AC4HW1: authentic VOX sounds in a vintage jacket

At the heart of the AC4HW1 are two 12AX7 preamp tubes and one EL84 power amp tube. These tubes pump no fewer than four watts of pure tube power through the 12-inch Celestion G12M Greenback speaker, resulting in a rich, dynamic sound with tight, full bass levels, punchy mids, and brilliant trebles. This vintage sound is perfectly accompanied by the retro looks of the AC4HW1. Thanks to its fawn-coloured vinyl covering, traditional VOX diamond-patterned grill cloth and gold & cream accents, the AC4HW1 looks like it came right out of the sixties.

User-friendly combo amp

You'll easily get the most beloved VOX sounds from the AC4 combo. Begin by connecting your guitar to the High or Low input, depending on the output of your pickups. Guitarists will often use the Low input for humbuckers and the High for single coils. Next, you can adjust the sound via the Volume, Treble, Bass and Master Volume controls. Finally, the AC4HW1 is also equipped with a HOT/COOL switch which allows you to bypass the tone control in HOT mode for a big gain boost that's ideal for solos.

Wrote the following about VOX AC4HW1 Hand Wired 4-watts 1x12 tube guitar amp combo

Eerlijk gezegd viel deze versterker mij wat tegen. De sound is echt te gek evenals de constructie trouwens. Ik denk dat het vooral lag aan de ruimte waar ik deze versterker kon uitproberen en het vergelijkingsmateriaal... De VOX AC15HW1. Dat verschil was toch best groot. De '4' heeft minder diepte/bas in de klank. 4 Watt is voor een huiskamer ook al snel heel hard en de 7,5 die je kunt gebruiken bij de '15' is niet veel luider, daar hoef je hem (de 15) dus niet voor te laten staan. Naar mijn idee zal het verschil in sound vooral te maken hebben met de grotere kast van de 15 want in de speakers zit geen verschil. Allebei Greenbacks. Dan vind ik 8oo euro een hoop geld, zeker toen bleek dat ik de 15 voor 160 euro meer kon kopen. Heb je een extra kanaal en meer watts tot je beschikking (en meer kilo's om te sjouwen, dat wel).
Kortom een prima versterker maar niet geschikt voor mijn doel. Er is ook nauwelijks meer aan te komen, in Nederland al helemaal niet meer. Zegt misschien ook wel iets...

Wrote the following about VOX AC4HW1 Hand Wired 4-watts 1x12 tube guitar amp combo

Niet de goedkoopste amp maar wel de "amp to end all other amps".
Zeer rijk aan klankkleuren, van helder clean tot vunzige overdrive. Allemaal mooi.

Met hi en lo input. Maar een gitaar met hotte pu's, die op menig andere versterker tot wanhoop brengt klinkt hier op beide ingangen goed. Een strat moet wel echt op de Hi.

Extra pluspunt is dat het volume heel goed te regelen is. De buren vinden hem 's avonds ook mooi. En als het moet kan die blazen.

Juweeltje. En hier zomaar op voorraad. Ik heb er, gezien zijn prijs, lang tegen aangehikt. En toen ik de knoop eenmaal had doorgehakt was die er de volgende dag ook meteen.
