General

This Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special has a few special characteristics that set it apart from its 'bigger brother', the Lone Star. For starters, it has two pairs of EL84s on board and a Mesa 5Y3 rectifier tube, which is the heaviest rectifier of the Mesa Boogie arsenal. It delivers tight lows, rich mids and ringing highs with that deep, sultry sag in the attack you might recognise from bluesy Texas rock music. Having said that though, the Mesa Boogie Lone Star is just as suitable for other musical styles as well.

Boutique-Style Amp with Vintage Overdrive

The rectifier tube is de-activated when the combo runs at full capacity, making the response to dynamics even tighter. Don't let its seemingly small 30 Watts of power fool you; this Mesa Boogie can be turned up loud - real loud! What's more, this boutique-style amp offers a characteristic vintage overdrive with a punch that can easily handle a medium-sized venue. At home, it's just as suitable, as its four EL84s can be switched off individually per channel for a capacity of 15 or even 5 Watts, which is plenty loud enough when you're burning the midnight oil and don't want to wake the neighbours.

Compact Size, Big Presence

The Lone Star Special's control panel on the front is exactly the same as the bigger Lone Star version. Its first channel offers a clean sound with ringing overtones, and its second delivers clean with an edge and deliciously vintage-sounding overdriven tones. You can set the amp breakup point yourself using the three cascading gain knobs in succession. The Lone Star Special 2x12 combo sends its sound through two Celestion Custom 90 Black Shadow speakers, which were specially made for Mesa Boogie. This Lone Star Special may look compact, but it packs an enormous punch!

The Blackstar Artist Series: Classic and Versatile

Monday 2 November 2015 By Richard | Bax Music

Blackstar has gone from a newcomer to an established name in a short space of time. One of their greatest assets is the Infinite Shape Feature or ISF circuit (as it's otherwise known) that they developed themselves. With the ISF circuit, Blackstar managed to greatly increase the versatility of tube amplifiers without the use of digital technology. The new Artist 15 and Artist 30 models both have an ISF circuit fitted and can produce the typical American 6L6 sound, as well as beloved British AC clean and crunch.

The VOX VTX Series - Evolution Accelerated

Wednesday 4 November 2015 By Richard | Bax Music

It's already been more than 10 years since VOX turned the amplifier world on its head with the Valvetronix series. This series of amps combined digital modelling technology with convincing tube sounds. Since then, models have slowly but steadily improved along with digital technology. Now however, the time is ripe for VOX to introduce another series that, rather than show another slow and steady improvement, offer something more like evolution accelerated. Meet the VT20X, the VT40X and the VT100X, the first three models from the new series.
