G. Schirmer - J.S. Bach: Six Suites for Cello

This edition of G. Schirmer's 'Library of Musical Classics' covers six famed cello suites by none other than Johann Sebastian Bach. The sixth suite was most likely originally written for a smaller 5-string cello also known as a viola pomposa. This instrument is smaller than a standard cello and is played like a viola, which during Bach's time made it possible to play larger intervals. These days, most cellists opt for the common 4-string cello. The first five suites are relatively easy to play by experienced cellists. The sixth suite, on the other hand, is infamous for the many large intervals that are difficult to play on a 4-string cello.
