General

ENGL offers a compact full-tube guitar amp head with an aggressive metal voicing with their E309 MetalMaster 20 Head. Where the GigMaster is a more all-round amp and the RockMaster is perfect for classic rock, the MetalMaster is ideal for the heavy stuff. The E309 is a 20W tube amp head powered by two ECC83 tubes in the preamp and a pair of EL84 power tubes. Together, they produce no less than 20 watts of pure, dynamic tube sounds. With a black grille and matte black control panel, this amp's got the looks to back up the wicked sound it can produce. It can be connected to any 8 or 16-ohm cabinet, but the ideal match is the ENGL E110 GigMaster 1x10 speaker cabinet.

ENGL E309 MetalMaster 20 head: light amp, heavy sound

Controlling the MetalMaster head is simple and intuitive. The clean knob controls the volume of the clean channel, and if you turn it up you get a nice crunchy edge. Lead gain lets you decide how much distortion the lead channel produces, so you can go from high-gain to screaming overdrive. Both channels share a 3-band EQ, and thanks to the mid-scoop function you can easily obtain that unmistakable heavy metal sound. You can add some digital reverb to the mix if you like, and you can also easily adjust the overall sound without affecting the volume balance between the two channels via the master volume knob.

Integrated Power Soak and versatile connectors

You'll find the built-in Power Soak function on the back of the ENGL E309 MetalMaster 20 Head. This allows you to lower the power from 20 W to 5 W or even 1W, so you get the same tube overdrive and dynamics at lower volumes. You can also switch off the speaker during recording by using the speaker simulation via the line output). Futhermore, there's an FX loop for your favourite effects pedals and/or processors, and you can connect 1x 8, 1x 16 of 2x 8-ohm speaker cabinets as well. Finally, if you add the two optional foot switches or the ENGL Z-4 to the mix, you can control the channels, reverb, mid-boost and FX loop from a distance while you play.

Tuesday 8 March 2016 By Julie Alexander

The first ENGL MetalMaster and RockMaster 20 amplifiers enjoyed great popularity, thought they didn't quite quench guitarists' thirst for even more power. Once the ENGL technician's caught wind of the requests, they were only too happy to comply, and have recently released their response in the form of the 40W MetalMaster and RockMaster. You can get either model as an amp head or a combo.
