General

Along with the combo version, ENGL also offers the ENGL RockMaster amp head. The E307 is the rock version of the popular GigMaster 15 head, and you'll no doubt notice the similarities in both the look and sound. Reminiscent of the GigMaster 15 is the grey front panel and the grey woven speaker cloth. The power amp is also equipped with two EL84 power tubes that deliver 20 Watts of real tube power to the three speaker outputs. The two switchable channels, clean and lead, are driven by a pair of ECC83 preamp tubes, and a digital reverb completes the picture.

Features of the ENGL E307 RockMaster 20 Head

Black chicken-head knobs are featured prominently on the grey control panel, and put a whole range of classic rock sounds at your fingertips. The gain control on the clean channel also serves as a volume control, and can give you those sparkling cleans or a nice edge. If you'd rather have more of a crunch rock or some hard rock distortion, then you'll want to go for the gain control on the lead channel. The 3-band EQ is shared over both channels, just like the mid-boost, which makes it easy to ensure that your solos cut through the mix. You can also adjust the total volume via the master volume without affecting the volume balance between the two channels.

Integrated Power Soak and Versatile Connectors

You'll find the built-in Power Soak function on the back of the ENGL E307 RockMaster 20. This allows you to lower the power from 20 W to 5 W or even 1W, so you get the same tube overdrive and dynamics at lower volumes. You can also switch the speaker off during recording by using the speaker simulation via the line output. Futhermore, there's an FX loop for your favourite effects pedals and/or processors, and you can connect 1x 8, 1x 16 of 2x 8-ohm speaker cabinets as well. Finally, if you add the two optional foot switches or the ENGL Z-4 to the mix, you can control the channels, reverb, mid-boost and FX loop from a distance while you play.

Tips or comments about this product
  • Please note: the picture of the back shows the combo edition with integrated speaker cable. The connectors, however, are identical.

Tuesday 8 March 2016 By Julie Alexander

The first ENGL MetalMaster and RockMaster 20 amplifiers enjoyed great popularity, thought they didn't quite quench guitarists' thirst for even more power. Once the ENGL technician's caught wind of the requests, they were only too happy to comply, and have recently released their response in the form of the 40W MetalMaster and RockMaster. You can get either model as an amp head or a combo.
