General

The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12 is a compact 4-unit synth module that boasts the same exact sound circuitry as its counterpart with keys, the P12, but more lightweight and portable. The P12 module is perfect for use on a studio desk or mounted in a 19-inch rack. If gives you hands-on control over the various synth parameters without a cumbersome keyboard. The Prophet 12 module is made by hand in San Francisco, USA, and has a rugged, steel housing.

Prophet 12 Module: Technology

The Prophet 12 module has the same exact circuity as the original version with keyboard. The hybrid digital/analogue architecture is engineered to combine of analogue sound and digital control options. It has 12 voices (the highest polyphony available in a DSI synth), each with five digital oscillators, a digital effects section, Curtis LPF, HPF, feedback circuit, delay, and an arpeggiator: despite its compact operating surface, this machine has everything you need. It boasts maximum freedom to configure oscillators, operators and modulators.

Interface

This module is 4 units high and comes complete with rack mounts, making it a great addition to any studio. As well as rack mounting, the Prophet 12 module can also be used as a tabletop synth that can easily be operated by a MIDI controller. The streamlined interface offers a fast, smooth workflow and the current settings of every function are easy to read on the clear OLED display. This P12 module has plenty of MIDI possibilities and can be seamlessly integrated into your DAW setup.

Just got the module version and I am very impressed.
I own many other poly synths, lot of vintage stuff. The pro12 comes nowhere short.
Plus, you can hook it up to a Pro2 keyboard version and you basically have a remote controller for it.
Great sound, great look and yes another great product from Mr Smith!

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
