General

Anyone who's been keeping an eye on Behringer knows that the brand is great at cloning synthesizer models that were born during an era we now call 'vintage'. This time, Behringer took the Octave CAT SRM II and rebuilt it into the fully analogue CAT, with the only difference being that the original came with a keyboard, while the modern version doesn't. The CAT is equipped with two VCOs; VCO1 features sawtooth, square and triangle wave patterns while VCO2 has sawtooth and block. Next to the oscillators, you can use ADSR and AR envelopes, with the ADSR including the ability to loop like a kind of LFO. For communication with other synths, the CAT is fitted with VC/gate connectors.

The Behringer CAT: Brilliantly Louth-Mouthed

Some synths have a silky-smooth sound, others are a little rougher around the edges. The Behringer CAT has a brilliantly loud-mouthed sound that can be opened up further by poly-chaining it to other units. That said, this synthesizer is fully analogue doesn't think twice about cross modulations so, if you're looking for a tinker-synth to shape up extreme sounds, this CAT is it. Just remember it's not one that purrs kindly!

Wrote the following about Behringer CAT Analogue Synthesizer
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase. The sound it produces tends to get pretty wild and unique once you start fiddling around with the modulation options. The waveform blending featured on the two VCOs is particularly easy to work with - none of my other hardware synths have this.

Pros: Looks and sounds great. A generally high quality build. The knobs and sliders feel particularly satisfying. The condensed sized and Eurorack compatibility compared to the original Octave Cat makes it much more suitable for the small home studio.

Cons: The layout of some features took me a while to grasp. The SynthTool configuration options at launch are limited (e.g. note priority is fixed). The end cheeks tarnished quite easily against some of my other gear.

* De lay-out is zeer overzichtelijk en intuïtief.
* Een grote diversiteit aan geluiden door de vele modulatiemogelijkheden.
* De LFO delay.
* Het instrument kan na firmware update worden omgezet naar “last note priority”.
* De CAT is een gevoelige en temperamentvolle synthesizer.

Klinkt waanzinnig dik in baslijnen, leads.
Goede instelmogelijkheden.

NAMM 2016: Casio MZ-X: A New MZ-2000?

Monday 11 January 2016

The image below recently turned up on the internet. Based on the text and the accompanying specifications, we assume that Casio is trying to lure us to their NAMM booth so they can present their latest keyboard/synthesizer: the MZ-X. This will likely remind keyboard enthusiasts of the MZ-2000, an old Casio model that, considering the words 'Reinvented, Reimagined, Reborn' is apparently about to be brought back to life. Rumour has it that two models will be released, the MZ-500 and the MZ-1000, but take that with a grain of salt; it's very possible that MZ-X is indeed the final name for this workstation.

NAMM 2016: Back to the '80s with Electro Harmonix

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Late last year, Electro Harmonix introduced the Crash Pad Analog Drum Synth, and at NAMM 2016 they'll be unleashing the Super Space Drum. Where the Crash Pad creates electronic cymbal sounds, the Space Drum generates a typically '80s drum sound - electronic yet warm and full of character. It can be used as either a standalone unit, or in combination with a looper or clock generator, for instance.
