If you don't want your sound system to ruin the décor or if you need a more discrete solution to play background music, installation speakers are the answer.
Ceiling and Wall Installation Speakers
Installation speakers are commonly used as part of a fixed audio installation or PA system. Installation speakers can be mounted to the wall or the ceiling and, if you demand more volume and bass, an installation subwoofer can be mounted alongside. Some installation speakers run on 100 Volts only and require a dedicated 100V amplifier; other installation speakers are also compatible with regular low-impedance systems such as 4 or 8 Ohm amplifiers. Always double-check the specifications to see what kind of installation speaker you're looking at.
Are Installation Speakers Waterproof and Safe for Use in Bathrooms or Outdoors?
Some ceiling and wall-mountable speakers are waterproof and can be installed outdoors or in the bathroom. You can tell just how waterproof any speaker is by its specified IP rating. IP ratings consist of two numbers: the first number indicates the resistance to dust, while the second number indicates the resistance to water. If you're looking for something to install outside, go for a speaker that has an IP rating of at least IPx4. Speakers rated IPx7 and up can be submersed in water of a certain depth for a certain amount of time.
An Installation Speaker System Plus an External Amp or an Active Installation Speaker System
Both passive and active speakers are capable of delivering solid sound. The difference is that an active speaker system features a built-in amplifier and audio inputs and can simply be plugged in, making them a compact solution for smaller set-ups, while passive systems are better for comprehensive audio set-ups that cover multiple rooms or zones. If you want full control over up to tens of speakers, we recommend going for a passive 100V speaker system.
Are There Any Wireless Installation Speakers with Bluetooth or WiFi?
You may come across wall or ceiling speakers equipped with a Bluetooth interface or the option to link it up with your network. In most cases, this will be an active speaker equipped with a built-in amplifier as well as power and audio ports. Connecting a compatible installation speaker to a wireless network often sets you up with central control via a computer, while Bluetooth installation speakers can be controlled with a smartphone or tablet.
