General
IK Multimedia's iRig guitar interface, which was introduced a while back, turned out to be a real success, so it was only a matter of time before the manufacturer came up with a successor for this popular product. The IK Multimedia iRig 2 guitar interface for iOS and MacOS allows you to transmit the output of, for instance, your solid-body guitar to an iOS or OS X device such as your phone or tablet. Additionally, this new edition of the guitar interface has a 6.3mm output that enables you to send your signal to an amplifier.
The Potential of the iRig 2 Guitar Interface
Like the original iRig, the iRig 2 allows you to apply a variety of virtual effect pedals to your incoming signal, which saves you some serious hauling - after all, a phone is much more manageable than a bunch of stomp boxes. An FX/THRU switch enables you to choose between your clean signal and the modified iRig2 signal. That way, it's possible to use the iRig2 as a recorder or tuner, while you transmit the clean output to your own equipment. Connect a pair of headphones to the iRig 2, and you're able to jam quietly with your guitar - a great way of warming up before a gig.
Software
The iRig 2 interface alone provides you with plenty of great options, but if you really want to get down to business you should download the AmpliTube app (for iOS, Mac). The free versions of the app (AmpliTube FREE) allow you to choose from various virtual effect pedals, including a delay, distortion and compressor. It's also possible to use other recording and editing software, but AmpliTube is the ideal software for most users. There are various in-app options to expand your virtual rig with new commercial software extensions. Just make sure to keep your feet under control - these virtual pedals are not to be stomped upon... If you're a guitarist who likes to work with mobile devices, you'll love working with the iRig 2!
