General

The old Hammond B3 organ has legendary status in the jazz, gospel and prog-rock scene - a reputation as forceful as its mammoth-grade weight, which made carting one of these things from gig to gig a hassle best avoided. These days, the sound of a B3 has become a lot more portable, not because Hammond have stopped making big and beautiful organs, but because they also offer up far more compact and band-friendly digital organs that still boast impressive, B3-style sound - like the Hammond M-Solo.

The Hammond M-Solo

In terms of size, this model is a slip of a thing compared to the B3, already making it a 100% stage-ready touring tool. The 49-note keyboard slims things down a bit further, but under the hood lies a whole world of options. The bank of drawbars works alongside six different sound groups, starting with four organ groups based on the sound of four vintage models: the B3, the Vox, the Farfisa and the Acetone, the registers of which are controlled via the drawbars - just like a real organ. The next group is a string machine with a choir which, rather than mimicking the sound of a big cinematic orchestra, gives you the classic sound of the string/vocoder machines of yesteryear, where your drawbars adjust the attack and release and determine whether the choir is made up of male or female voices. The final group is a synthesizer (yep, you get one of those too) and, while it is fairly basic, it offers just enough for stage work, so you can fiddle around with an oscillator, a filter, an envelope to your hearts content.

Effects

Since the sound of any organ can't do without the sound of a Leslie, a digital emulation also comes built in, and that's alongside the chorus and vibrato effects - a definite must when it comes to playing with the string section or synth pads and, for those who need even more, an overdrive and a delay/reverb have been included. Basically, for such a compact chunk of hardware, you're getting a mass of elements to play with, backed up by exactly the control features and sounds that any keyboardist will need, and polishing off a real Hammond organ that you can comfortably carry under one arm.

Wrote the following about Hammond M-solo Burgundy Drawbar Organ/Synth

Even een correctie op mijn eerste review: de pitchbend verhoogt niet een halve toon, maar een hele. Dat is eigenlijk nog minder bruikbaar dan als het maar een halve toon zou zijn.

Wel kun je met de pictbendknop als je tegelijkertijd de octave indrukt de toon een octaaf verhogen of verlagen. Dan krijg je een portamento. Dat is wel redelijk bruikbaar.

Een ander pluspunt is dat de stand van de drawbars na uitschakeling behouden blijft. D.w.z. dat na aanzetten van het apparaat de registratie overeenkomt met de actuele stand van de drawbars. Bij sommige andere keyboards is dat wel eens anders. Dan wordt je geconfronteerd met een klank die je niet zou verwachten aan de hand van de stand van de drawbars. Verwarrend.

Wrote the following about Hammond M-solo Burgundy Drawbar Organ/Synth

Wil de Hammond M-solo gebruiken als extra keyboard naast mijn andere keyboards (met 61 of 76 toetsen).

1. Plus: Licht gewicht.
Min: Geen waterfallklavier (want dat zou het zwaarder maken).
2.Plus: Kan net als bij de drawbars van de Hammond en de Vox ook bij de andere orgels en de
strings/choir sterkte per register instellen, zodat je geheel je eigen kleur kan maken.. Dat is een aspect
dat mij in het bijzonder bevalt. (Dat kan bij de originele orgels niet. Daar is het aan of uit).
Min: Bij de Hammond werkt dat, zoals het hoort, traploos. Bij de andere orgels gaat het in (8) stapjes.
Dat hoor je als je het langzaam doet door klikjes. Maar als je het het snel doet valt het niet op.
3. Plus: de synthesizersectie biedt veel mogelijkheden voor het maken van je eigen geluid.
Min: mis wel een LFO.
4. Min: Grote misser is de pitchbend. Daarvoor worden de leslieschakelaars gebruikt. Daardoor is het
gelijk een halve toon omhoog of een halve toon omlaag en niks daartussen in. Terwijl het bij een pitch-
bend toch de bedoeling is dat je traploos micro-intervallen kunt maken. Bij een Hammond niet
gebruikelijk (werkt hier dan ook niet op de orgelsecties), maar bij een synthesizer zeer gewenst. Dit
maakt de pitchbend hier in feite onbruikbaar.
5. Plus/min: er zijn drie patches waarin je je eigen instellingen kunt opslaan. Fijn dat ze er zijn, maar drie is
toch wat summier.
Al met al een instrument dat uitnodigt tot creativiteit op het gebied van kleuren maken (geen presets).
Ik ben er blij mee.
