General

Brutal and pure; 30 Watts of honest, hard-working tube-driven power. Answerable for the warm, round tube sound and precocious yet sensual character of the smallest member of the Lone Star family, is the four EL84s in the power amp. The five 12AX7s in the preamp and Mesa 5Y3 rectifier tube, the most heavy-duty rectifier in the Mesa Boogie arsenal, deliver sound as sultry as a long Summer night in the Texan desert. Brilliant highs, velvety mid-range and rich, compact lows with a deep 'sag' in the attack are delivered by one tried-and-tested 12-inch Celestion C90-speaker.

Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special: A Golden Sheen to the Tonal Spectrum

The Lone Star Special has an adjustable power of 5, 15 and 30 Watts per channel. At full power, the sag of the rectifier tube disappears and attack tightens considerably, making this combo fit for super-fast riffs. While 30 Watts may not sound like much, this is a Mesa Boogie amp and in the world of Mesa Boogie, 30 Watts is loud - really loud. However, by toning it all the way down to 5 watts, the Class A gain changes from a Push-Pull configuration to a single-ended gain to bring the second harmonics back and give a golden sheen to the tonal spectrum. This Lone Star Special is seductive, warm and has all the power and capability to deliver a well-aimed punch to the gut.

The Smallest Sibling with the Biggest Character

The face of the Lone Star Special Head has all the same features as its big brother. The first channel is developed for cleans with rich bell-bright overtones and the second channel is for cleans-with-an-edge that can tip over into sumptuous vintage-style overdriven tone. The breaking point can be dialed in accurately using the cascading gain pots one by one to gradually upset the balance and push finally it over. While this is the smallest member of the Lone Star Family, it's certainly the most precocious and has the biggest character.

The Blackstar Artist Series: Classic and Versatile

Monday 2 November 2015 By Richard | Bax Music

Blackstar has gone from a newcomer to an established name in a short space of time. One of their greatest assets is the Infinite Shape Feature or ISF circuit (as it's otherwise known) that they developed themselves. With the ISF circuit, Blackstar managed to greatly increase the versatility of tube amplifiers without the use of digital technology. The new Artist 15 and Artist 30 models both have an ISF circuit fitted and can produce the typical American 6L6 sound, as well as beloved British AC clean and crunch.

Now however, the time is ripe for VOX to introduce another series that, rather than show another slow and steady improvement, offer something more like evolution accelerated. Meet the VT20X, the VT40X and the VT100X, the first three models from the new series.
