General

Marshall's DSL1CR is a tube guitar amplifier combo with a specially-designed 8-inch Celestion G8E-15 speaker that delivers good bass and well-balanced mids and trebles. It has built-in digital reverb as well and is perfect for practising and recording at home. When you connect it to a mixer using the line output, you'll still be able to enjoy its great tube sound thanks to the built-in cabinet simulation.

DSL1CR: tubes and sounds

The two ECC83 preamp tubes and the single ECC82 power amp tube ensure a warm, full Marshall sound. The classic gain channel gives you a clean tone as well as average distortion with a 'brown' character. The ultra gain channel offers even more distortion and you can easily switch between the channels using the included footswitch. Both channels share bass, middle, treble and reverb controls that allow you to tweak your tone to perfection.

Marshall DSL1CR 1x8" Tube Combo Amp

Unbelievable

This amp is absolutely perfect for playing at home but don’t think it’s just some cheap practise amp. I have owned many Marshalls (some at 5x the price of this one) but this sounds as good if not better than any of them. I have never been a fan of the Marshall clean sound but this sounds a bit warmer than usual and I love the clean sound on this little thing. Also the partially open back makes this amp sound huge despite its tiny size.

A massive bonus for me was the FX loop. Never seen an FX loop on a 1 watt amp in my life but have been wanting it for ages. I only play at home and need a low power amp as anything over 1 watt is too loud to crank the volume to get proper valve breakup. This goes down to 0.1 watt which is great for bedroom use. I’ve had other Marshall’s which go this low but this amp outdoes them all. The EQ is great. You t is shared between both channels but it is a proper EQ. Again I have had other DSL Amos and never liked the high gain sound as it had a fizzy sound that always sat over the main sound (was in a jar) but this does not happen in these new DSLs. They are just brilliant. The only downside, if I can really call it a downside is the built in reverb isn’t the best. But as the amp has an FX loop everyone is just going to run a decent reverb in the loop so it really doesn’t matter. The built in reverb is better than nothing and will do fine until you get yourself a good pedal. Oh the amp also comes with a foot switch to change between clean and ultra gain channels. The ultra gain channel has loads of gain and even though I probably won’t use it that much it sounds awesome. Honestly I cannot believe how good this amp is. If you are after a low wattage amp that does it all, look no further, you’ve found it.

The Blackstar Artist Series: Classic and Versatile

Monday 2 November 2015 By Richard | Bax Music

Blackstar has gone from a newcomer to an established name in a short space of time. One of their greatest assets is the Infinite Shape Feature or ISF circuit (as it's otherwise known) that they developed themselves. With the ISF circuit, Blackstar managed to greatly increase the versatility of tube amplifiers without the use of digital technology. The new Artist 15 and Artist 30 models both have an ISF circuit fitted and can produce the typical American 6L6 sound, as well as beloved British AC clean and crunch.

The VOX VTX Series - Evolution Accelerated

Wednesday 4 November 2015 By Richard | Bax Music

It's already been more than 10 years since VOX turned the amplifier world on its head with the Valvetronix series. This series of amps combined digital modelling technology with convincing tube sounds. Since then, models have slowly but steadily improved along with digital technology. Now however, the time is ripe for VOX to introduce another series that, rather than show another slow and steady improvement, offer something more like evolution accelerated. Meet the VT20X, the VT40X and the VT100X, the first three models from the new series.

Wednesday 20 January 2016 By Lizanne

Renowned instrument colossus Roland first introduced their Blues Cube amplifiers back in the 1990's. The idea was simply to program a transistor amp to sound like a tube amp.
